Once when reinstalling Windows 10 on a PC, I encountered a different condition.
At first, it was normal. But halfway through, precisely when setting up partitions, I got the following message:
Windows cannot be installed to the disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI system, Windows can only be installed to GPT disk
The meaning of the message is that Windows cannot be installed because the disk type is now MBR. Whereas Windows can only be installed on GPT disk types.
Therefore, we must first change the disk, from MBR to GPT.
How to Convert MBR to GPT (or vice versa)
The first time I got that message, was when Windows 10 had not been released long ago. At that time, the tutorial on how to change MBR to GPT was still very limited in information.
Well, here now I want to share information on how to convert it.
Keep in mind that you must backup your data first. Because from my experience, the data stored on the hard disk will be deleted later.
If you have a backup, please follow the steps.
#1. Converting MBR to GPT Via CMD
The process of converting MBR to GPT is actually not difficult. Through the Command Prompt, the problem you are currently experiencing can be easily resolved.
We can access this Command Prompt during the Windows installation process.
For your own way like this:
Step 1 . Please enter first into the Windows installation as usual. In the process, click Next, then click Install Now .
- To enter the Windows installation, you can use the DVD
- Don’t forget to set the BIOS to boot through the installation
Step 2 . Click Shift + F10 key to open CMD.
Step 3 . After CMD is opened, type “ diskpart ” > Then click Enter .
Step 4 . Then type ” list disk ” again > then press Enter.
- This disk list serves to display the hard disk or SSD installed on your computer or laptop
- Record the disk you want to use to install again.
Step 5 . Then type again ” select disk 0 ” to select disk. Or customize, for example, disk 1 or disk 2 .
Step 6 . Type ” clean ” > then click Enter .
- Commands clean this will remove the data. Make sure you have a backup as I described earlier.
Step 7 . Finally, type ” convert gpt ” to change the hard drive format to GPT or ” convert MBR ” if you want otherwise.

|Convert MBR||Converting disk to MBR|
Step 8 . After all the steps were done, now close CMD, then continue the Windows installation process.
This method can be applied in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. But I personally just tried it on Windows 10 only.
#2. Using Software
In addition to using CMD, you can also change MBR to GPT using certain software.
I myself have tried this method, and it was 100% successful when I did it, where my hard drive was formatted to GPT.
But what you need to understand, because it uses software, it means that your laptop or PC must still be able to enter Windows (the system has not been formatted).
For the steps like this:
Step 1. Please first install the AOMEI Partition Assistant application. There is a free version, really.
Step 2. On the right, click Convert to GPT, then click OK to confirm.
Step 3. Next, click OK to start the change process.
Step 4. After the process is complete, I suggest restarting your PC or laptop first.
Step 5: Then after restarting, then you can immediately reinstall Windows.
- If your hard drive is formatted / there is no system, you can remove the hard drive temporarily, then install it on another computer.
- This software can be used on all versions of Windows, be it Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and others.
- You can also make settings related to partitioning, or migrating the OS to an SSD.
How to Recover Lost Data After Convert
As I mentioned earlier, this converting process will delete data, so it is highly recommended to do a backup first.
So, what if it’s gone? The solution, you can use an application to restore the data.
Here I use EaseUS Data Recovery. Here’s how:
Step 1 : First, please install the EaseUS Data Recovery application first.
Step 2 : If so, please open the application.
Step 3 : After the application opens, please select the drive whose data was lost earlier.
Step 4 : Wait for the scanning process for a while. If so, you can click Recover to restore the data.
Step 5 : If you have, then you can open the data again as usual.
What is the difference between MBR and GPT?
For those who don’t know, GPT stands for GUID Partition Table.
The definition itself is more or less a standard hard disk partition table layout, which uses a Globally Unique Identifier.
GPT is presented to replace the MBR position because it has several updates that have been adapted to current needs. For example:
|party GPT||Party MBR|
|GPT has support for storage capacities up to 9 ZB||While MBR can only support up to 2TB only.|
|GPT supports creation of up to 128 primary partitions||MBR only supports 4 primary partitions, the rest uses logical.|
|System files on GPT disks are stored multiple times ( multiple ) as backups.||For MBR this feature is not yet available.|
|A GPT disk is mandatory when trying to install Windows 10. Note, the motherboard must support UEFI.||For this MBR is usually more widely used to install older versions of Windows.|
Broadly speaking, it’s more or less like that. There may be a few more that haven’t been written yet. If you have additional, please send via comments, yes.
The final word
Well, that’s about the information from me, about how to change MBR to GPT or vice versa.
Keep in mind again, you must first make sure that the data on your computer (especially important data) is backed up ( backup ), before doing this converting process.
Because frankly, until now I have not found another method that can be done without losing data.
Even before that I had tried a tutorial, but unfortunately, the data I had was still deleted.
That’s why here I also discuss a tutorial to restore the data. Who knows you’ve experienced the same thing, hehe.
Hope it is useful.
